Today, I want to highlight Shirley Lee. Lee is the first black female scuba diver. Born on She started her aquatic career as a lifeguard in high school. A few years after she graduated she met Dr. Jones in 1965, who taught her how to dive after she inquired. That same year she acquired her certification and has logged over 1,000 dive trips since then. Whoa, that’s incredible! In 1964, she became the first female member of The Underwater Adventures Seekers Scuba Diving Club, an organization that Dr. Jones help found. Eventually, Lee became one of the founding members of The National Association of Black Scuba Divers (NABS). She helped train and mentor new scuba divers.

Last year, Shirley Lee was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Fame.
